On our way home we spotted about 10 manatees at Satellite Beach.
In some Brevard canals where manatees have been gathering by the dozens this week, kayakers have paddled right up to the endangered species, scaring juvenile manatees away from the warm water. Manatees need water about 68 degrees or warmer. Cooler water can make manatees, especially younger ones, susceptible to fatal disease. That's why not disturbing them as they take refuge in warmer tributaries and canals is so crucial.
As we were sitting on the balcony later that afternoon, we spotted a North Atlantic right whale and her calf. Under the Endangered Species Act, people must keep at least 500 yards from the whales. Only about 300-400 of these whales remain, making them among the most endangered marine mammals in the world.
