I wish I had pictures to post along with this little story I am about to tell.
First of all, Meghan's "ideal" Grandmother is a tiny little ol' lady, gray haired, short, sweet and soft-spoken. Personally, that is not the way I am or want to be....I am not tiny, use clairol and try my best not to look "old"...sweet, well, that debatable and I am certainly not soft-spoken and can be heard fairly easily.
While standing in line at Walmart the other afternoon, I met the nicest little ol' lady. She was 84 years young and had the heart and spirit of a much younger person.
She introduced me to her Daughter, who was visiting from Texas and would be leaving in 3days. She told me she also had another Daughter who lived in Penn. and missed a lot.
I also told her that I had 2 Daughters, whom I missed...one from Vermont and one from Maine.
Her eyes sparkled when she told me she loves Vermont and sadness crossed her face when she said when her Husband was alive and when her girls were young, they spent many summers vacationing in Vt.
I explained I was originally from Vt.....a little city she had probably never heard of, near the Canadian border called St. Albans. She and her Daughter both beamed and with smiles on their faces, both exclaimed at the same time that this is where they spent those wonderful summers.
What a small world this is....
She then looked up at me, her face wrinkled with age and asked me if she could hug me!!!
As she put her frail arms around me, she explained that she likes to hug people each and every day....and that everyone needs at least 1 hug a day. She then looked up at the large African-American girl who was checking her out and asked if she could hug her! The girl looked a little startled at first, but then came around the counter and put her arms out for the hug.
We exchanged more idle chit-chit and they went on their merry way.
The checkout girl and I looked at each other in total amazement, knowing what we had shared.
I wish I had had my camera with me that afternoon, but I really didn't need it...I will remember her face for a long, long time and more importantly, I will feel her special hug for a long, long time.
We should all hug someone everyday....someone we know and we love and someone we don't

Gram, this is an amazing story. What a perfect little woman she was. If only everyone would pay it forward.
